    Overview

About the major launch plan template

A major launch is a release that people outside the engineering team are waiting for. Marketing, support, and customers all depend on the date, so the plan has to cover readiness beyond the code.

This template is the built-in Major launch template in Atlas. It creates a release of the Major type named after the year and its version, such as 2026 launch 3.0.0, bumps the major version from the latest released one, sets the target thirty days after the start, and plans deployments to Development, Staging, and Production.

Every one of its seven checks is required, so the release cannot be moved to Released while any of them is open, and sign-off requests show who has approved the launch and who has not.

    What is included

    What is in the template

    • Seven required checks

Scope agreed and frozen, full regression and load tests passed, security review signed off, user documentation published, support team trained on the changes, rollback plan written and rehearsed, and launch announcement approved.

    • A major version

The major number is bumped from the latest released version, so 2.4.1 becomes 3.0.0.

    • A thirty-day plan

The target date is set thirty days after the start, room for testing, documentation, and support training.

    • A three-stage pipeline

Planned deployments to Development, Staging, and Production.

    • Release notes outline

Headings for Highlights, What is new, Improvements, Breaking changes, Upgrade guide, and Known issues.

    FAQ

    Questions, answered.

What should a major launch plan include?
Beyond testing, a major launch needs a security review, published user documentation, a support team trained on the changes, a rehearsed rollback plan, and an approved announcement. This template makes each of those a required check.
How long should a major launch take to plan?
This template sets thirty days from start to target. Change the dates in the wizard to match the size of your launch.
Why is a breaking changes section in the notes outline?
A major version is where incompatible changes belong. A dedicated section, followed by an upgrade guide, tells customers what they must change before they upgrade.
