Release template
A hotfix release plan for an urgent fix to a live problem: narrow scope, a second reviewer, a smoke test in staging, and the incident kept up to date.
Overview
A hotfix is the release with the least time and the most attention on it. The pressure to ship quickly is exactly why the few checks that matter should be written down in advance rather than remembered under stress.
This template is the built-in Hotfix template in Atlas. It creates a release of the Hotfix type named Hotfix followed by its version, bumps the patch number from the latest released version, sets the target one day after the start, and plans deployments to Staging and Production only.
Because a hotfix is its own release type, a workspace can let hotfixes through a change freeze: a moratorium that names Hotfix as an allowed release type turns its block into a warning for that type.
What is included
Root cause identified and linked, fix reviewed by a second engineer, smoke tested in staging, rollback plan confirmed, and incident and customers updated.
Planned deployments to Staging and Production, the shortest path a fix should take to users.
The patch number is bumped from the latest released version, so 2.4.1 becomes 2.4.2.
The target date is set one day after the start, which keeps an open hotfix visible as soon as it slips.
Headings for What was broken, What changed, and Who was affected, the three questions a customer asks after an incident.
How to use it
Use the template button on this page, or start a release at /releases/new and choose Hotfix.
Name the fix after the problem, add the fixing task to the scope, and link the incident on the deployment you record.
Have a second engineer review the fix, record the Staging deployment, and tick the smoke test check once it passes.
Record the Production deployment, update the incident and customers, and move the release to Released.
