Release template
A data migration release plan for a release that moves or reshapes data: a tested backup, a dry run on a copy of production, record counts before and after, an agreed downtime window, and a reviewed rollback script.
Overview
A data migration is the release that is hardest to undo. Code can be redeployed in minutes, but data that was moved or reshaped wrongly may take a restore, and a restore that was never tested may not work.
This template is the built-in Data migration template in Atlas. It creates a minor release named Migration followed by its version, bumps the minor version from the latest released one, sets the target ten days after the start, and plans deployments to Development, Staging, and Production.
Every one of its five checks is required, so the migration cannot be moved to Released while the backup, the dry run, the counts, the downtime window, or the rollback script is still open.
What is included
Full backup taken and restore tested, dry run completed on a copy of production, record counts verified before and after, downtime or read-only window agreed, and rollback script reviewed.
The target date is set ten days after the start, room for a dry run and its fixes before the real run.
Planned deployments to Development, Staging, and Production.
The minor number is bumped from the latest released version, so 2.4.1 becomes 2.5.0.

How to use it
Use the template button on this page, or start a release at /releases/new and choose Data migration.
Take and restore a backup, run the migration on a copy of production, and record the counts you expect.
Agree the downtime or read-only window with the people affected, and plan the Production deployment for it.
Record each deployment as it runs, compare the record counts, and move the release to Released once they match.
