    Definition

    What is Semantic versioning?

Semantic versioning numbers a release as major.minor.patch: the major number changes for breaking changes, the minor for new features, and the patch for fixes.

A version such as 2.4.1 tells a reader what kind of change to expect. Moving from 2.4.1 to 3.0.0 warns of breaking changes, 2.5.0 adds features without breaking anything, and 2.4.2 only fixes defects.

Calendar versioning is the main alternative: the version names the date, such as 2026.10 for a release in October 2026, with a counter for a second release in the same month. It suits products shipped on a schedule rather than by feature.

Atlas release templates can bump either kind for you: a major, minor or patch step from the last released version, or the next calendar version for the current month.

    FAQ

    Questions, answered.

When should you use calendar versioning instead of semantic versioning?
When releases follow a fixed schedule and readers care more about when a release shipped than about compatibility, such as a monthly product train. Libraries that others depend on usually keep semantic versioning.
What does a pre-release suffix mean?
A suffix such as 2.0.0-rc.1 marks a candidate before the final 2.0.0. It sorts before the release it leads to.
