Definition
MTTR (mean time to recovery) is the average time from the start of an incident until the service is restored. It measures how quickly a team recovers from failure.
MTTR is one of a family of measures. MTTD (mean time to detect) is how long a problem exists before anyone notices, and MTTA (mean time to acknowledge) is how long an alert waits before a person takes it.
Averages hide outliers, so teams often look at the median and at the slowest incidents as well. The measures are most useful as a trend: is the team getting faster at noticing, answering and recovering?
Atlas records the times an incident is declared, acknowledged and resolved, so these measures come from the incident record rather than from someone rebuilding them by hand.
