Definition
A change freeze is a period when a team stops or restricts releases and deployments, usually around a holiday, a sale, peak traffic or a time with too few people to watch production.
A freeze trades speed for stability at the moments when a failure would cost most or be hardest to fix. Retailers freeze before a big sale, finance teams around the close, and most teams over holidays when few engineers are on hand.
A good freeze is specific. It names a window in a time zone, the reason, which environments and projects it covers, and how strict it is: a warning, a block on deployments, a block on releases, or a full freeze where nobody can even create a release. Urgent fixes go through an exception that someone accountable approves.
Atlas treats freezes as moratoriums linked to release management: a window can repeat every year or every week, warns or blocks at the level you choose, lets named release types such as hotfixes through, and records every exception request and decision.
